The Blues
Blues music is an instrumental and vocal type of music which is loosely based off of the formation of notes called "blues Notes". The origins of the blues lay in the spirituals, religions music and hymns of the African American community in the ante bellum period and was adapted to the new instruments of the early 20th century like the electric guitar.
The blues also has origins in the traditional communication methods used by African slaves in the ante bellum period of the American south known as field songs or work songs or work hollers. These chanting and shouting mechanisms for communications among the slaves developed into a complex form of conversation and often carries forbidden or secret information in the form of the codes used in the songs which were only recognized by the slaves themselves. There are also parts of blues music that derive from narrative ballads of Scotland and Ireland. The roots of the blues though can principally be found in the African style shouting and communication employed by the slaves in the pre civil war American South. Many of today's most popular forms of music have their origins in the blues with modern hip-hop, rap, jazz, bluegrass country, rock and roll, rockabilly and jazz. Almost all of the most popular forms of American music owe at least some of their roots to the blues.
